Prepare an account you can keep access to
Alipay supports eligible overseas-card arrangements for visitors. You can begin with an overseas mobile number; a Chinese number is not a universal prerequisite for this setup. Card eligibility and the app’s verification requirements still apply to your own account.
These points are supported by the Alipay-origin card guide and Shanghai’s updated mobile-payment instructions, read 18 October 2026. The steps below describe the supported path, not a walkthrough of a personally tested account. Menu labels can change with app version or region.
Get the prerequisites together
Have your phone, access to its registered number, the eligible card you intend to use, and the identity details requested by the app. Keep access to the issuer’s authentication method as well. Read and decide whether to accept the service’s own terms inside the actual app; there is no need to send a passport image, card number or verification code to China Quick Guide.
If you already use another supported overseas wallet, compare its mainland-payment facility before opening an extra account. A supported wallet is an alternative payment arrangement, not proof that all the features of the Alipay app are available through it.
Follow the app’s supported setup path
- Obtain the official Alipay app from the appropriate app store and select the language you can read.
- Register or sign in, retaining access to the number used for the account.
- Look for Me → Bank Cards, then follow the current card-addition and identity/authentication prompts.
- Read the outcome in the app. If the card is rejected or the process is unfinished, resolve the stated issue before depending on it.
Shanghai’s instructions describe two merchant-payment methods: scanning the merchant’s code, or presenting your payment code to a cashier. Those are different from assuming that a personal transfer, balance feature or every mini-app purchase will work with an overseas card.
Know whose code is being scanned
| At the checkout | What happens | Your check |
|---|---|---|
| You scan the merchant’s collection code | The payment flow opens; you may need to enter the amount | Confirm the recipient, amount and funding source |
| The cashier scans your payment code | You display the code through the app’s payment function | Show it only for the intended transaction and check the result |
Both workflows appear in Shanghai’s English instructions and the Chinese and English 2024 visitor guidance. They are merchant-payment workflows, not an instruction to scan any QR code offered by a stranger.
If card linking fails, note the exact message and whether issuer authentication appeared. The bilingual guidance identifies issuer authorization as part of linking. Ask the app or issuer about the actual failure; do not keep changing account details at random or treat every rejection as a need for a Chinese bank account.
At the first merchant purchase
Make the purchase with enough time to ask for help if needed. Check the merchant and amount before confirming; inspect which funding source is selected and any fee or conversion information shown. Afterward, check the final payment state and confirm that the merchant considers the bill paid.
These checks are practical recommendations, not evidence that your setup has passed a test. A linked card alone is not a guarantee for a future merchant or service.
If the card or payment does not work
Separate the phone, identity and card checks
- No registration or sign-in code: check the number shown by this screen and whether you still control it. If the code is requested inside a bank authentication step, ask the issuer which contact or verification method applies. Changing the Alipay number is not a demonstrated fix for every bank prompt. For line access abroad, consult your carrier; for account access, use Alipay support below.
- Passport or identity information is not accepted: use the document option actually offered for your account and compare each requested field with your original document. If the option is missing, review is pending or the wording is unclear, ask support what applies. Do not invent an identity number, change your nationality to fit a menu, or assume a mainland-bank-card prompt is a universal visitor requirement.
- The card-addition step fails: keep the exact error and note whether a bank-authentication page opened. Ask Alipay about card eligibility or its verification step; ask the issuer about a bank rejection, authentication or card restriction. Correct a demonstrated error rather than repeatedly unlinking cards or making new accounts.
The Shanghai instructions support overseas-number registration and conditional card linking. Alipay’s bilingual international-card agreement published in 2021, sections 1–2 and 4, separates service/card information, identity information and issuer rules. It is background, not proof of the exact verification sequence or approval time for every current account; follow the terms and prompts actually presented to you.
A linked card still fails at a merchant
Read the transaction-specific message and selected funding source. Ask whether this is a merchant-payment flow that supports the card. Do not try to prove merchant eligibility by making a personal transfer or topping up a different product. Use the shared failure and transaction-status checks if the result is declined, pending or inconsistent with the merchant’s record. Confirm what happened before paying the bill again.
Reach Alipay through its official support
Use the genuine app’s help/customer-service facility or the official service centre. Its Chinese contact panel lists 95188, then option 1 for mainland service and +86 571 95188 for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas callers. The English Alipay support page also publishes +86 571 95188. These contact details were checked 18 October 2026; call charges, connection and language availability have not been tested.
Keep the actual stage, error, time, merchant and reference ready for support. If the message concerns issuer authentication or a card decline, use your bank’s established channel as well. Support is not a promise to remove a restriction or approve the card.
Prepare cash or a physical card before relying on the wallet. Return to the payment overview to choose a fallback that fits the failed step.
