Check the exact visit before building the day around it
There is no single booking rule for attractions in China. The venue, branch, admission product and date determine whether you need a reservation, a paid ticket, an original identity document or a separate booking for an exhibition.
For a first Beijing or Shanghai visit, choose the attraction you most want to see, confirm its actual admission arrangements and then group the rest of the day around it. Source text was reviewed on 18 October 2026. This guide has not completed a ticket purchase or checked live availability.
Check the four visits used in these itineraries
Palace Museum: book first and approach Wumen
Reserve before the visit. The museum does not sell same-day tickets. Its published rules open reservations seven days before the visit at 8 pm Beijing time and accept passports for non-mainland visitors. Start from the official English visit page and follow its Tickets link to the international booking portal. A release window is not proof of available tickets. The portal displays email-code sign-in, but this guide has not tested code delivery, account creation, payment or a completed booking.
Match the confirmed ticket to the original passport. Before committing the day, check each visitor, document number, date, session and product on the actual confirmed order. The museum’s Chinese visitor rules, section (一), require the original valid document used for the reservation. Keep the confirmation accessible as well; a screenshot, profile entry or payment record does not establish that the booked passport matches.
The rules prohibit changing the ticket type, visitor, date or session after sale. They do not describe a complete process for correcting a passport-number error or replacing the document for the same person. If a passport has been renewed, lost or replaced, or the number is wrong, ask official ticket support how to handle the existing order before travelling or cancelling it. Do not assume that editing an account profile changes the ticket, that carrying two passports guarantees entry, or that staff can amend the order at the gate.
Enter at 午门 — Wumen (Meridian Gate), the sole visitor entrance. A 20 June 2025 Beijing 12345 answer specifically directs foreign visitors with the original booking document to the manual ticket-checking channel at Wumen. This is dated official guidance, not a current lane map or a tested procedure. Ask entrance staff which lane applies on your date; the reviewed sources do not establish its exact position, queue, equipment or handling of changed documents. Manual checking does not remove security screening.
Check the session against the current notice and your confirmation. The Chinese rules say morning bookings must be checked by noon, while afternoon checks start no earlier than 11 am. That earliest afternoon check is not a promise of admission at any later time: check the applicable last-entry limit separately.
For the approach, the museum describes 东/西筒子河路 — East/West Tongzihe Road as options when visiting only the Palace Museum. A combined visit via Tiananmen Square needs its separate access arrangements. Recheck current security access; these route labels do not establish an exact pedestrian route or waiting time. 神武门 — Shenwumen and 东华门 — Donghuamen are exits, not alternative entry gates.
For unresolved ticket or document questions, the museum lists 400-950-1925, 8 am–8 pm; the 2025 answer says English service is available. The English visit page also lists [email protected] for ticketing questions. Neither is a promise of a ticket by email, a document amendment or a same-day replacement. The on-site purchase advice later in that 12345 answer concerns the Summer Palace, not this museum.
Return to Beijing Day 1. Keep lunch and the afternoon flexible if admission remains unresolved; arrange onward transport from the exit you actually use. Source text was reviewed on 18 October 2026; no reservation, passport check or security approach was tested.
Temple of Heaven: choose park admission or the combined ticket
Choose the included areas before paying. A 公园门票 — park admission ticket covers the park, not its separately ticketed attractions. A 联票 — combined ticket includes park admission plus the 祈年殿 — Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, 回音壁 — Echo Wall and 圜丘 — Circular Mound. A separate 景点票 — attraction ticket should not be mistaken for park admission as well. Check the actual product; do not infer that another exhibition or experience is included. March 2026 official combo-ticket answer; dated ticket definitions.
Use building hours for a building visit. The operator’s Chinese visitor-service page, read on 18 October 2026 with no displayed update date, lists:
- April–October: listed architectural attractions open at 8 am, stop entry at 5.30 pm and close at 6 pm.
- November–March: they open at 8 am, stop entry at 4.30 pm and close at 5 pm.
The surrounding park opens earlier and closes later. The listed architectural complexes normally close on Mondays except statutory holidays, also confirmed by the city’s September 2026 notice. Check temporary notices as well: holding a combined ticket does not override a building closure. The same service page’s two-day advance instruction concerns a guide service, not a universal ticket deadline.
Keep the purchased entry QR and matching document available. The official Changyou Parks Chinese ticket notice and July 2024 English Temple ticketing page distinguish foreign-visitor checks from domestic ID-card entry:
- Use the official Changyou Parks or Temple of Heaven channel and select the right date, session and product. The city’s foreign-visitor guide explicitly includes passport purchase and explains finding the e-ticket in “My Ticket”.
- Check the actual confirmed visitor, document and ticket. A payment record or order reference is not the entry QR. Carry the original matching passport as a preparation precaution; the foreign-passport clause says valid matching documents without fully specifying their physical handling.
- At the park entrance, have the purchased ticket QR and the document used to buy it ready. The English ticketing page also calls for those items at the separately ticketed attractions. Keep both accessible after entering the park.
A gate poster’s QR for buying a ticket is different from your purchased admission QR. Same-day buying in the notice is conditional on capacity; it is not confirmed admission. Keep access to the live order, with a permitted screenshot as backup. This review has not established code refresh, screenshot-only acceptance, passport scanners, a manual lane or a lost-document substitute. Ask staff before assuming any workaround.
If online buying fails, identify whether the problem is the account/phone, document, payment or ticket retrieval. A July 2025 official Changyou answer, responding to a Jingshan question, describes mainland-number verification for a first platform purchase. It does not establish the current rules for every separate Temple channel. Ask the park about the applicable service window and your document before relying on on-site help or buying again. The March 2026 answer lists 010-67028866 as a 24-hour hotline, with English service 8 am–5 pm; this is published information, not a tested response time.
For Beijing Day 2, save 天坛公园东门 — Temple of Heaven East Gate and confirm the approach against your order. The city visitor guide lists Tiantandongmen, Line 5 Exit A, and Tianqiao, Line 8 Exit C, as approaches from different sides. These are not tested gate-to-building walks. No purchase, QR scan or document verification was tested.
Yuyuan Garden: check the daytime product and visitor gate
Choose the daytime classical garden for Shanghai Day 1. Similar names can lead to different products:
- Daytime garden — 豫园 / 上海豫园: the operator lists the official 上海豫园 mini-program and north/south ticket windows. The city’s Huangpu visitor information also lists on-site purchase and the 上海豫园 official account. Neither establishes stock on your date or a complete foreign-passport process.
- Garden night tour — 豫享山林: the July 2025 English launch notice describes its own south-gate time slot and reservation QR. Those instructions do not establish daytime entry or current night-tour operation.
- Lantern festival — 豫园灯会 / 豫园商城: the January 2026 English ticket guide describes a separate seasonal product, sold through 豫园商城, with a ticketed folk-art lantern zone. That notice covers 26 January–3 March 2026, with some entry periods starting in the afternoon. Identify the product and included area, rather than assuming anything before sunset is a garden day ticket. This historical notice is not a schedule for your visit.
Before paying, settle the document and ticket route. The operator’s daytime information and visitor rules were read on 18 October 2026; neither displays a publication/update date or explains a complete foreign-passport workflow. Ask official ticket staff:
- Is this the daytime garden ticket for my date, and can it be bought with my foreign passport? Is the original required at purchase or admission?
- If choosing a reduced-price ticket, am I eligible and which supporting documents are accepted? The visitor rules require relevant concession documents for ticketing checks; they do not establish that every overseas student or age document qualifies.
- How do I retrieve and present this ticket? Is any exchange or staff check needed, and at which gate?
Carry your original passport as a preparation precaution, not as a claim that these pages publish a universal requirement. If the mini-program rejects the document, do not invent a local ID number. Ask the venue about its listed windows before relying on a window to resolve it. The operator lists 021-63260830 for enquiries. No passport form, scan, QR-only entry or assisted procedure was tested.
Save the individual visitor gate. The operator lists 北门 — North Gate, 福佑路168号 — 168 Fuyou Road, for individuals and groups, and 南门 — South Gate, 豫园老街279号 — 279 Yuyuan Old Street, by the Nine-Bend Bridge landing, for individuals. The office at 218 Anren Street is not a visitor-gate instruction. Use your chosen ticket’s entrance and current signs; a night-tour or lantern checkpoint is not proof of daytime garden admission. The English city overview, updated August 2025, corroborates Fuyou Road but adds no passport procedure.
A question to show staff — teaching example, not a confirmed procedure:
我想买豫园日场门票,用外国护照可以吗?入园要出示护照原件、票码,还是先换票?从哪个门检票?
I want a daytime Yuyuan Garden ticket. Can I use a foreign passport? At entry, do I show the original passport, a ticket code, or exchange the ticket first? Which gate checks it?
Return to Shanghai Day 1. If admission is unresolved, keep the meal break and check an accessible public-area route to your next stop; do not assume surrounding lanes are always unrestricted during events.
Shanghai Museum East: ordinary admission and booked experiences differ
For an ordinary individual visit, no advance reservation is required under the published conditions. Bring an original valid identity document. The city’s English East Museum guide, updated 21 November 2025, explicitly names a passport as an example of valid ID. That supports carrying a passport; it does not establish how a particular passport is read at the gate.
Choose the arrangement for your visit:
- Ordinary individual admission: save 上海博物馆东馆 — Shanghai Museum East, 1952 Century Avenue, and B1层东门 — B1 East Gate, near Dingxiang Road. The museum describes security screening followed by identity-document scanning. No reservation does not mean no identity check, no queue or guaranteed capacity in every gallery.
- Special Reservation — 专项预约: 古代文明探索宫 — The Curio-City and 数字馆 — Digital Gallery still require advance reservations. The Chinese and English guidelines direct you to the East Museum reservation page and its Special Reservation option; the official linked visitor graphic also directs visitors to the museum’s WeChat account. Check the exact space, visitor and session on the confirmation. These sources do not establish every foreign-passport field, overseas-number verification or a walk-up replacement slot. Paid special exhibitions have their own ticket notices; ordinary entry or an interactive-space booking does not establish admission to them.
- Priority entry — 绿色通道: the first-floor North Gate, near Century Avenue, has a published priority channel for visitors aged 65 and above and other listed categories, including persons with disabilities. Check your eligibility and accepted original supporting documents with the museum if relying on it. This priority covers venue entry, not paid special exhibitions, Curio-City or the Digital Gallery. It is not a general foreign-passport or failed-reader lane. Reserved groups also use a north-side group channel under separate rules.
The Chinese visitor conditions and English admission page were read on 18 October 2026. Both date their guidelines’ effect to 15 September 2024 without giving a later revision date. Recheck current notices for your date. These are museum publications and related official reports, not independent entry tests.
If a passport cannot be read, keep the original and any relevant reservation available and ask entrance staff for the applicable check. The reviewed pages do not establish a named manual counter, an exact assisted-entry sequence or permission to bypass checks. Do not switch to the priority/group gate or use another branch’s kiosk instructions as a presumed workaround. The museum lists 021-60226699, 10 am–6 pm, for enquiries; foreign priority-document acceptance and special-booking conditions should be settled before relying on them.
Return to Shanghai Day 2. If only an optional experience is unavailable, keep a shorter ordinary-gallery visit if general admission is available. If venue admission itself cannot be resolved, retain lunch and shorten the day. No passport scan, reservation or assisted admission was tested.
Before booking, identify what you are buying
Find the official venue website first, then follow its own ticket or reservation link. Check the Chinese and English name, city and branch. A museum’s main collection, a temporary exhibition, an audio guide and a guided tour may be separate products.
For each visit, establish:
- The date and any entry session, including the last-admission rule.
- The exact admission or exhibition included.
- Which traveller details and identity document are accepted.
- Whether that document must be presented in its original form.
- The total price, any service charge, and the actual cancellation or change terms.
- Where to enter and how to retrieve or present the confirmation.
Do not enter a made-up local ID number if a form does not support your document. Look for the official foreign-visitor process or contact the venue’s own support. A third-party seller’s product description is not a substitute for the venue’s admission conditions.
Treat payment and confirmation as different stages
After submitting, open the actual order and check its status. Match the visitor, date, session and product to your plan. If a platform says the request is pending, do not treat that as confirmed entry.
Save the reference and instructions permitted by the provider. Keep access to the account or message used for delivery. A screenshot can help find an order, but may not replace an original document, a live code or the admission method the venue specifies.
If you use an intermediary, understand what it has confirmed: a ticket, a reservation request, a guided-tour place or another service. Make sure you know who handles changes or a failed booking before paying.
Plan the day around the entrance, not just the map pin
Use a venue-confirmed entrance when preparing an address card. Check current opening and closure notices separately from the booking screen. Confirm the correct visitor entrance and allow for reaching it, security screening, food, rest and the journey onward. Do not assume the street address shown on a map is the right entry gate.
Use the map entrance and branch checks before choosing a metro exit or taxi destination. Save the expected exit separately for lunch and the onward journey; if you leave elsewhere, start the next route from that actual location.
Keep related activities in a practical area. Use the Beijing city guide or Shanghai city guide for grouping ideas, then use current transport information for the actual connection.
If you cannot get the visit you wanted
Avoid locking the whole day to an unconfirmed slot. Choose another available date or keep a nearby alternative that you have also checked. Do not assume an indoor replacement is open, has capacity or follows the same reservation rules.
For a changed or cancelled visit, read the terms of the actual order before submitting a replacement. Resolve an unclear payment status through the booking service and your payment record.
On the evening before the visit, check the official notice, confirmation, original-document requirement and route again. The travel-app setup guide helps keep those details accessible when you need them.
