Three full days, with room to stop

Use three full sightseeing days for the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and Mutianyu Great Wall. Arrive the day before and keep your departure separate. If your flight lands on the first morning, this is a menu to shorten, rather than three days to squeeze into two and a half.

This plan suits a first visit with substantial walking and a separate out-of-town day. It is not an accessibility-tested route. Hills, steps and the distance through large sites deserve their own planning; a lift or cable-car ticket does not establish a step-free visit.

Official Chinese and English material reviewed 18 October 2026. Opening rules below are scoped to the named venue; recheck the date you actually book. Visit lengths and connection allowances are editorial budgets, not measured walking times or live transport estimates.

Day Main visit After lunch Keep optional
1 Palace Museum / Forbidden City Finish the northward visit, then rest Jingshan, only with current entry arrangements confirmed
2 Temple of Heaven, including the buildings you booked Qianmen and a short surrounding street walk Another neighbourhood, only if you still have energy
3 Mutianyu Great Wall Continue the same visit and return to Beijing Nothing with a fixed evening admission or departure

Choose accommodation using the Beijing areas guide. This itinerary does not assume a particular hotel or that every starting point is a short metro ride away. For dishes and meal areas that fit these days, use the Beijing food guide; keep the meal and rest allowances below.

Use the Beijing local-journey guidance to choose a station exit or taxi destination for each entrance; use the departure plan for a flight or train after your stay.

Book the core visits before fixing the order

Use the shared reservation checklist for the palace and Temple of Heaven document, product and entrance checks. Keep those conditions with your confirmed dates before choosing the order below. Mutianyu has its own admission and return checks in Day 3.

The Palace Museum normally closes on Mondays, with holiday exceptions, and its visitor information says it does not sell same-day tickets. Its published individual rules open reservations seven days before the visit at 8 pm Beijing time; availability is not guaranteed. Use the official individual rules and the document you will carry. Treat the confirmed admission date and slot as the first anchor in your calendar. Palace Museum visitor information.

At the Temple of Heaven, the surrounding park and the ancient building complexes have different hours. The park opening early does not mean you can enter the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests at the same time. The building complexes normally close on Mondays except statutory holidays; a September 2026 notice confirms the return to that arrangement after the summer exception. 天坛公园游园服务; September 2026 closure notice.

For Mutianyu, check the current opening notice, your admission product and transport separately. A dated reopening or night-tour announcement is not a permanent timetable. The operator pages reviewed give different hours in different contexts, so this plan deliberately does not promise one year-round closing time. 慕田峪 dated reopening notice; operator opening-hours page.

If a Monday falls within your stay, move whole days around after checking all three bookings. Do not simply move the Forbidden City onto a closed day to preserve the table above. National-holiday arrangements require a fresh check.

Day 1: the Forbidden City, then a quiet afternoon

Morning: approach the correct entrance

Save 午门 — Wumen (Meridian Gate) as the admission entrance, rather than a pin somewhere in the palace grounds. The museum describes a south-to-north visit, with exits at Shenwumen and Donghuamen. Do not plan to enter from the northern exit because your hotel happens to be closer. 故宫参观路线.

Before leaving, match each visitor, passport number, date and session to the confirmed order, and bring the original valid passport used to book. Check the Palace Museum booking and entrance checks for the dated official manual-channel guidance, session limits and support. A replaced passport or wrong number needs official advice before travelling; an account-profile edit is not proof the ticket changed.

The June 2025 official answer describes manual ticket checking for foreign visitors at Wumen, but does not locate today’s lane or guarantee a document amendment. Ask staff which line applies and follow security instructions. Check your approach the previous evening; a Palace Museum ticket does not establish access to Tiananmen Square. If admission cannot be resolved, keep lunch and shorten the day rather than relying on an unconfirmed same-day ticket or a rushed replacement attraction.

As a planning allowance, protect roughly four to five hours for the museum visit, plus the approach and any entry queue. This is not a recommended minimum for every visitor. Choose the main route and a few rooms that interest you instead of trying to complete every exhibition. If your confirmed slot is later, shift lunch earlier and remove the optional afternoon stop.

Lunch and afternoon: finish before adding more

Allow about an hour for lunch and a seated break around the end of the visit. The Beijing meal guide explains how to keep a priority dinner separate from an uncertain palace exit. Pick a suitable place that is open on your actual route; this guide has not tested a restaurant or reserved a table. Avoid making an off-site lunch appointment depend on an exact palace exit time.

Optional: Jingshan after the palace

景山公园 — Jingshan Park can be a separate, optional visit after the palace and a meal break. If you want to add it, choose the entrance from the palace exit you actually use; confirm park admission and hill access before setting off. It is not a guaranteed replacement for an unavailable Palace Museum booking.

Ticket guidance needs a date check. The city’s July 2024 ticketing page describes online and on-site sales. A March 2025 official reply also says visitors can buy same-day tickets at the park’s windows with a passport or other accepted identification. However, the undated English overview still tells foreign visitors to book by phone in advance. For this plan, the dated ticket guidance supports investigating an on-site purchase; it does not guarantee entry on your date. Check the current notice and your document requirements, carry your original passport, and retain the order instructions if buying online through official Changyou Parks channels. No purchase or document check has been tested for this guide.

  • Leaving by 神武门 — Shenwumen, the north exit: investigate 景山公园南门 — Jingshan Park South Gate as your next destination. The municipal Chinese description places the park across the street from Shenwumen. Save the south-gate label rather than only the general park address, and follow the actual pedestrian crossing and staff directions. This is a geographic connection, not a verified crossing route or timed walk. Chinese geographic description.
  • Leaving by 东华门 — Donghuamen, the east exit: check a new route from that exit to an operating park entrance, or skip the park. Do not reuse a Shenwumen-to-south-gate instruction as though you had left at the same place. The Palace Museum’s visitor guidance distinguishes the northern and eastern exits.

The park authority identifies south, east and west gates and describes the hilltop view over the palace. If you choose the viewpoint, keep roughly another hour inside the park, plus separate time for leaving the museum, reaching the gate, buying or checking tickets and any queue. This is an editorial allowance for a short visit, not a measured climb or a complete park circuit. It does not establish a step-free route. Park authority’s Chinese overview.

Check hill access as well as gate opening. A historical park notice closed the hill and south gate at different times on 9 August 2025; it is an example of temporary arrangements, not a current closure notice. Do not assume a general park ticket includes Shouhuang Hall, a special exhibition or a night event: check any extra visit separately.

If the palace finishes late, you are tired, or weather makes the climb unsuitable, remove Jingshan and keep your meal and return journey. There is no compulsory sunset stop. If you do visit, plan the journey back from the park exit you actually use.

For a shorter day, return to your hotel after lunch. Moving Shichahai or another distant walk onto an already full palace day is a choice, not a missing part of this itinerary.

Day 2: Temple of Heaven and Qianmen

Morning: choose the buildings, not just the park name

Before leaving, open the Temple of Heaven ticket and entrance checklist. Park admission alone does not include the separately ticketed buildings. For the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, Echo Wall and Circular Mound, check a combined ticket or the appropriate separate attraction product alongside park admission. Confirm the visitor, date, session and included areas on your actual order.

The official foreign-visitor guidance calls for the purchased entry QR plus the document used to buy the ticket, including checks at the ticketed attractions. Keep both accessible after entering the park and carry the original matching passport as a preparation precaution. A poster for buying a ticket, payment screenshot or order reference is not the admission code. Phone verification and passport/manual-check details vary by channel or remain unconfirmed; resolve an unclear order with official support before buying again. If building admission is unavailable, choose a park-only walk only if park admission is available and that suits you, or omit the stop while keeping lunch. Official English ticketing instructions.

Use 天坛公园东门 — Temple of Heaven East Gate as a starting point to investigate; confirm the entrance against your ticket and route from your hotel. The Line 5 station-to-park-gate example keeps the metro exit and park entrance separate. The published Line 8 approach is from the western side; it is not the same arrival point.

Budget about three hours inside for your selected buildings, gardens and breaks. One possible focus is the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests and the ceremonial route toward the Circular Mound, subject to the areas actually open and included in your admission. You do not need to cover every gate or every exhibit.

Plan the building part from 8 am, subject to your booked session and actual-day notice. The operator lists last building entry at 5.30 pm in April–October and 4.30 pm in November–March, with closure half an hour later; normal Monday building closures have statutory-holiday exceptions. The park staying open later does not extend building entry. If you have a slow morning, shorten the park walk before sacrificing the site you came to see. 天坛公园 hours and visitor service.

Lunch and afternoon: one short central-city walk

Choose a dish and a suitable meal area with the Beijing food guide. Keep an hour for lunch, then a flexible 45–60-minute connection allowance before starting a Qianmen walk. That allowance is an editorial buffer for leaving the park, choosing transport and reaching your starting point; it is not a verified journey duration.

Use your actual park exit as the next route’s starting point, then compare metro connections or a taxi journey to the chosen restaurant and Qianmen starting point. Do not reuse the morning East Gate approach as though it were also your afternoon exit. Save the restaurant branch and entrance before setting off.

Explore a selected stretch around 前门 — Qianmen, with Dashilan as an optional extension. Beijing tourism material places these areas within its central-axis and surrounding-neighbourhood routes; it does not establish a single continuous, timed walk for this day. 北京市文旅局 central-axis routes.

Give this walk around one to two hours, stopping for a drink if needed. If you want Shichahai instead, replace the Qianmen afternoon and check that separate connection. Do not add it automatically. Save the evening for dinner, charging your phone and confirming the Great Wall return plan.

Day 3: Mutianyu, with the return arranged first

慕田峪长城 — Mutianyu Great Wall is in Huairou, outside the central-city sightseeing area. Keep it as a dedicated day. Confirm admission and the complete return before leaving your hotel; one does not establish the other. The passport and transport sources below were reviewed on 18 October 2026; no ticket purchase, gate inspection or journey was tested.

Match your passport, admission and lift product

Start at the scenic area’s official English site and follow Reservation Center → Tickets. Its published real-name rules accept passports. Check each traveller’s name, passport number, visit date and product against the actual confirmed order, and carry the original passport used to book.

The Chinese visitor notice, section 三、检票须知, and English notice, under Ticketing Instructions, say passport bookings need no ticket exchange: present the original booking document at the designated gate. They do not specify every passport reader or an exact assisted-entry sequence. Do not treat a screenshot or the separate non-ID exception as a guaranteed replacement for a lost or changed foreign passport.

Check the live booking calendar. The Chinese homepage advertises 30 days ahead, while the older visitor notices say 15. This review has not resolved the difference or checked live seats, overseas-number verification or foreign-card checkout. If your document is rejected, the order is unclear or the original is unavailable, resolve it before leaving Beijing. The Chinese homepage lists 010-61626928 for ticket enquiries; your chosen coach operator handles its own transport booking.

Keep Great Wall admission, the internal shuttle and the optional lift/slide separate when reading the order. The visitor notices say cable-car tickets and ropeway/slide tickets are not interchangeable; they direct cable-car bookings to the north ticket gate and ropeway/slide bookings to the slide ticket gate. Confirm the gate for your actual product. A city coach’s drop-off, a shuttle platform and a wall ticket gate are different points: save the connection between them and ask staff if the instructions do not match. Do not send a driver to an unspecified “north entrance”.

Choose one transport plan for both directions

  • Public buses with a transfer: the operator’s published Chinese and English routes outline Dongzhimen → Huairou Beidajie → a local connection toward Mutianyu. Confirm the current stop names, direction, final walk and useful return connections for your date. A route description does not establish the last return bus or how much time to allow between services.
  • A booked tourist coach: identify the exact operator, city pickup point, scenic-area return bay and return departure. Do not mix the outward instructions from one service with another operator’s return. The Chinese transport page is undated; the English transport article is dated 22 March 2024. Some listed coach pickup points differ. Use the selected operator’s current confirmation for both directions; these pages are leads for checking, not a current timetable.
  • A private return transfer: agree the vehicle’s waiting or return arrangement, pickup point, contact method, included waiting time and any additional charge before leaving Beijing. This is a planning option, not a service tested or recommended by this guide.

Some direct buses operate under special conditions. An April 2026 Beijing Bus Group notice described a Wangjingxi–Mutianyu service for holidays, with advance reservation and a minimum passenger requirement. It does not establish daily service, operation on your date or a seat for you.

Work backwards from the return departure

Before paying for a booked service, obtain the return instructions as well as the outward ticket:

  • Save the return meeting-point label or map pin, departure time and contact method. Confirm whether you must use the same vehicle, whether a round-trip order fixes your return service, and what happens if you miss it. A parking-lot label listed for one operator is not every coach’s meeting point.
  • Separate road transport from scenic-area admission, the internal shuttle, and your chosen ascent/descent product. Check what your actual order includes.
  • Establish when to leave the wall for your descent, then allow for queues, walking and any shuttle to the meeting point. A scenic-area closing time is not the time to leave a watchtower for a bus.
  • Ask what happens if weather changes access or the service is cancelled. For a private transfer, confirm how to reach the driver if mobile data fails.

For public buses, replace the booked departure with the last useful complete connection back to Beijing, including the transfer; the final local bus alone is not enough. This guide has not confirmed current headways, last buses or actual-date coach operation. If you cannot establish admission or the complete return, choose another confirmed arrangement or move the outing before travelling. If a service fails while you are there, contact that operator and scenic-area staff to establish a safe onward plan; this guide does not guarantee a walk-up coach seat or an available return car.

Leave room for lunch, water breaks, queues and getting back down. Select a short section that matches your ability; do not set a distant watchtower as a compulsory finish. Be ready to turn back earlier than the advertised closing time to meet your own descent and return transport deadlines.

Keep the evening free. A train, flight or non-refundable dinner booking makes road delays and a slow descent much harder to absorb.

If weather, booking or energy changes the plan

Swap whole days only when the replacement venue is open and the booking can be changed. If the palace is unavailable, this guide does not promise another museum with same-day admission. If Mutianyu closes, follow the operator notice and use a separately confirmed indoor visit or a rest day. An outdoor park is not a rainproof substitute for another outdoor site.

For heat, rain or fatigue, remove Jingshan and reduce the Qianmen walk first. Keep lunch and the return margin. Travellers who need step-free access should confirm the exact entrance, accessible route, toilets and transport with each venue before adopting this plan.

Continue with the Beijing city guide, airport transfers or the nine-day Beijing–Shanghai route. No bookings or transport have been arranged.
