Give each city three full days
For a first visit combining Beijing and Shanghai, use nine calendar days and eight nights: arrival, three Beijing sightseeing days, a rail transfer day, three Shanghai sightseeing days, then departure. This keeps the long-distance move out of the middle of a museum visit or a Great Wall return.
The route runs Beijing → Shanghai. If flights make the reverse order more convenient, rebuild the venue calendar and transfer arrangements before reversing the rows. Do not assume the same weekdays or airport connections will still fit.
This is an independent-travel draft for visitors able to arrange admission, accommodation and transport. It does not determine whether your passport, visa or any transit permission covers the journey. Check the entry-information guide against your own circumstances before paying for the route.

The nine-day route and eight nights
| Day | Plan | Where you sleep | Keep clear |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive in Beijing, transfer, check in and settle | Beijing, night 1 | Timed sightseeing |
| 2 | Beijing day 1: Forbidden City | Beijing, night 2 | A packed evening after the museum |
| 3 | Beijing day 2: Temple of Heaven and Qianmen | Beijing, night 3 | Extra distant neighbourhoods |
| 4 | Beijing day 3: Mutianyu Great Wall | Beijing, night 4 | A train or flight that evening |
| 5 | Check out, train to Shanghai, transfer and check in | Shanghai, night 1 | Non-refundable attraction bookings |
| 6 | Shanghai day 1: Yuyuan Garden and the Bund | Shanghai, night 2 | A compulsory night-tour add-on |
| 7 | Shanghai day 2: Museum East and Lujiazui | Shanghai, night 3 | Assuming the two stops are adjacent |
| 8 | Shanghai day 3: Jing’an and Butterfly Bay | Shanghai, night 4 | Walking the entire district |
| 9 | Check out and depart; complete any required shopping-refund steps | No overnight included | Anything that threatens the departure margin |
That is four Beijing nights plus four Shanghai nights. An overnight flight before Day 1 is outside the eight-night count. Flight schedules or an early hotel-access requirement may mean you need additional arrangements.
Use Beijing in three days and Shanghai in three days for the sightseeing order, entrance names, meals, rest and shorter versions. The rows here are not additional bookings or an alternative set of city instructions.
Before fixing the calendar, use the attraction reservation checklist for the actual visitor, product and entry conditions. For meals, use the Beijing meal plan on Days 2–4 and Shanghai meal plan on Days 6–8. Keep those breaks inside the city days; they are not extra cross-city restaurant excursions.
Fit the closure days before buying the train
The Palace Museum normally closes Monday, with holiday exceptions; the Temple of Heaven’s ancient building complexes also normally close Monday except statutory holidays. The surrounding Temple park has its own opening arrangements. Palace Museum visitor information; Temple of Heaven guide; September 2026 notice.
Yuyuan Garden normally closes Monday except statutory holidays. Shanghai Museum East normally closes Tuesday except national holidays. Use the exact date and product when checking each venue; the garden’s daytime admission and night-tour arrangements should not be merged. 豫园游园须知; Museum East visitor information.
Illustration only: arrive on a Monday. This would place the palace on Tuesday, Temple of Heaven on Wednesday, Mutianyu on Thursday, rail travel on Friday, Yuyuan on Saturday, Museum East on Sunday and the Jing’an walk on Monday, with departure on Tuesday. It avoids the normal closure weekdays for those core indoor visits. It does not establish ticket availability, holiday opening, weather, train service or quieter weekend crowds for any actual week.
For another arrival weekday, start with the palace booking and move complete sightseeing days as needed. Recheck the museum day in Shanghai before committing to a train date. If a venue is unavailable, reduce the visit list or add time; do not preserve the table by assuming an exception will apply.
Day 5 is a door-to-door move
Begin a rail search with the actual departure and arrival cities, then compare the exact station names on each service. Beijing South → Shanghai Hongqiao is a route to investigate, not a promise that every suitable train uses those stations. Confirm the service, date, departure and arrival stations in the official 12306 booking result.
Do not choose a train from a headline about the fastest possible journey. A January 2026 Shanghai timetable-change announcement is a dated news item, not a current search result for your departure. This guide has not retrieved a live train duration or fare. dated Shanghai timetable announcement.
Let T be the duration shown for your actual train. Then build the day around it:
| Part of the move | Illustrative planning allowance |
|---|---|
| Beijing hotel entrance to the correct departure station | 45–75 minutes |
| Station entry, security, finding the gate and boarding margin | 60–90 minutes |
| Train | T, taken from the service you actually book |
| Shanghai station arrival to the hotel | 60–90 minutes |
These connecting times are editorial assumptions, not measured routes or official minimum arrival requirements. They may be inadequate for your hotel location, mobility needs, traffic, holiday queues or a more distant station.
For a worked example only, if T = five hours, the table totals 7 hours 45 minutes to 9 hours 15 minutes from leaving one hotel to reaching the next. The calculation is 45 + 60 + 300 + 60 = 465 minutes at the lower end, and 75 + 90 + 300 + 90 = 555 at the upper end. Five hours is an input to this example, not a verified journey time for a particular train. Add time for checkout, meals or delays outside those allowances.
For the final leg, use the railway station-to-hotel checklist, then the Shanghai local-journey guidance for the metro or road connection. Save the actual arrival station and hotel entrance using the map route workflow. Recheck both if your train changes.
This is why Day 5 has no fixed museum or garden booking. If everything runs smoothly, dinner near your hotel is enough of an arrival plan.
What to confirm before the rail day
Use the document details required for your actual booking, and carry the accepted original document used for it. The 12306 English FAQ describes identity checks and station procedures; the current Chinese rail rules make clear that boarding checks stop before departure, with station requirements to follow. The printed departure minute is not an instruction to reach the station at that moment. 12306 English FAQ; 铁路旅客运输规程.
Prepare the transfer in this order:
- Confirm the train is booked, with every traveller, date, station and document correct. A search result or pending payment is not a completed booking.
- Check the route from your Beijing hotel to the named station, including the correct drop-off or metro approach. Work backwards from the station’s current instructions with a margin suitable for your party.
- Save the Shanghai hotel’s Chinese name, address, entrance and contact details. Confirm check-in arrangements and what to do if arrival is delayed.
- Decide how you will get from the actual Shanghai arrival station to that hotel. Do not substitute airport-transfer instructions simply because the station and an airport share a district name.
- Plan lunch and water. The allowance table does not confirm catering availability or dietary suitability on a train.
Use the train-travel overview, passport ticket guide and boarding guide for the process. They should remain the source of detailed rail instructions rather than duplicating changing rules in every itinerary.
Plan Beijing purchases around your actual exit port
If shopping refunds matter to your trip, read the Shanghai tax authority’s current Q&A before buying. Keep the unused goods, invoice and refund application together through the rail move; travelling from Beijing to Shanghai is not leaving mainland China.
Before accepting a refund advance in Beijing, ask the issuing store and agency to confirm the arrangement for your actual departure port and receiving agency. Do not assume any Shanghai airport counter can complete it. Resolve a changed flight or an unclear agreement with the responsible agency before departure; this itinerary does not establish a bank-to-bank acceptance agreement or card-hold release procedure.
For Day 9, use the complete flight-departure plan, follow your actual airport’s instructions and keep goods accessible until the applicable handling is clear. No universal extra airport-time allowance is promised for refund tasks.
Keep the arrival and departure days useful
On Day 1, focus on reaching the hotel, getting online, paying for essentials and sleeping. See the first-day guide and the airport guide for your actual airport: Beijing or Shanghai if you reverse the route. A late flight does not leave a reliable palace slot.
On Day 9, use the checkout-to-boarding guide for a flight, or the station and boarding guide for a train. Start with the real departure and its provider’s current arrival requirements. Confirm the terminal or station and the route from your hotel. Any local walk is optional and must fit around luggage, checkout and the departure margin; it is not a fourth Shanghai sightseeing day.
For the overall preparation order, use the first-trip hub, payment guide and hotel check-in guide.
When plans change
If the Great Wall is closed or unsafe to visit, follow the operator’s current notice and change that Beijing day. Do not move an uncertain wall return onto the rail day. The operator has issued weather-related reopening notices, but these do not guarantee future access. Mutianyu dated operations notice.
If the rail plan fails, open the issued order and use the change, refund or missed-train task. Contact the booking provider and hotel through the actual channels, update the arrival plan and revisit the next day’s fixed admission. Keep the detailed railway rules in that guide; this itinerary does not determine onward-connection protection or a last available service.
With only seven calendar days, you cannot keep the same structure of arrival + three Beijing days + transfer + three Shanghai days + departure. Reduce sightseeing days, remove a city or add time. Combining arrival or departure with a short walk may be possible for an individual schedule, but it does not create another full day.
This guide leaves those decisions visible. Tickets, hotel access, current route times and venue calendars still need checking for the traveller and date before the plan can become a booked trip.
