Beijing for first-time visitors: a practical city guide

How should I get from the airport to my accommodation?

Identify PEK or PKX, compare rail and road transfers, and work through Beixinqiao or Caoqiao to your hotel's confirmed entrance.

Confirm the airport before choosing the route

Start with the airport code on your flight booking: PEK is Beijing Capital International Airport; PKX is Beijing Daxing International Airport. Treat them as separate arrival plans. A hotel described as “near the airport” needs to name which one.

This is an arrival-planning guide, with source text reviewed on 18 October 2026. It does not give a live timetable, guaranteed taxi price or a terminal-specific walking route.

Compare the two rail approaches

Your arrival Rail option to investigate What still needs to happen
Capital / PEK Capital Airport Express; Dongzhimen is one city-side connection Choose the connection that suits your accommodation, then plan the final station-to-door leg
Daxing / PKX Daxing Airport Express, with a connection at Caoqiao Check your onward urban route and whether a further road journey is easier with luggage

The Beijing Subway fare explanation distinguishes the airport lines from the regular subway fare system. Buy the ticket for the route you are actually using; do not assume a normal urban fare includes an airport segment. Dongzhimen’s connection is identified in the city’s Capital Airport Express service report; Caoqiao is identified in its Daxing transport update. These references establish connections, not the current full stopping pattern.

For PEK, choose the interchange before buying

The Capital Airport Chinese transport page lists these city-side connections:

Capital Airport Express stop Chinese name Urban lines listed
Sanyuanqiao 三元桥 Lines 10 and 12
Dongzhimen 东直门 Lines 2 and 13
Beixinqiao 北新桥 Line 5

Choose by the full hotel journey. Dongzhimen is an option, not the only possible city-side stop.

The airport page places the T2 boarding point in the parking building’s second basement and the T3 point on the parking building’s second floor. Beijing’s older English transport page agrees on those locations but gives an incomplete older route without Beixinqiao. Follow the airport’s current signs and operator notices for the actual service, terminal walk and last train; do not use that old English summary as the complete line map.

For PKX, continue with the separate Daxing plan above. These PEK stations are not Daxing Airport Express stops.

Finish the Beijing journey after airport rail

PEK: Beixinqiao, then Dengshikou if it fits your hotel

If your property confirms 灯市口 — Dengshikou as a useful station, compare this example: PEK Airport Express → 北新桥 — Beixinqiao → Line 5 towards 宋家庄 — Songjiazhuang → Dengshikou → the hotel’s confirmed entrance. The airport’s Chinese guide confirms the Beixinqiao interchange; Baidu Maps’ Line 5 listing places Zhangzizhonglu and Dongsi between Beixinqiao and Dengshikou. Check the current platform direction and actual service before boarding.

At Beixinqiao, follow the Line 5 interchange signs rather than leaving the station for a guessed street pickup. Before reaching Dengshikou, open the hotel’s supplied exit and entrance instructions. Choose the final walk by the actual branch and street address; this example does not establish a convenient route for every hotel marketed as Wangfujing. Use the place and branch checks if the map result differs from your booking.

No hotel exit, walking distance, lift route, journey time or through-ticket arrangement has been tested here. If the final walk is impractical with luggage, compare a full airport road transfer before starting the rail journey.

PKX: Caoqiao, then a planned pickup

A lower-change option to compare is Daxing Airport Express → 草桥 — Caoqiao → an arranged road journey to your hotel entrance. The city’s Daxing transport update identifies the airport–Caoqiao connection. The rail-plus-road combination is an editorial option, not a tested transfer or a promise that it is the cheapest choice.

Before leaving PKX, establish how you will arrange and pay for the onward vehicle. At Caoqiao, use the booked service’s reachable street-level pickup point, check the vehicle and destination, and keep your hotel contact available. This guide has not verified a taxi rank, pickup bay or staffed airport-style service at Caoqiao. If that handoff is unresolved, arrange a usable airport pickup instead of making the station your fallback by assumption. Use the taxi and pickup guide for the transaction.

Ask the property about the last few minutes

Send the property your intended station and ask for the useful exit, full Chinese address, actual guest entrance and any steps or luggage restrictions. Keep its reply beside your hotel confirmation and address card. Do not invent an exit from the hotel’s straight-line distance on a map.

These are editorial message examples to adapt:

  • Which station exit should I use, and where is your guest entrance?

    请问我应该从地铁站哪个出口出来?酒店客人入口在哪里?

  • I have luggage. Does that route have steps, or is there a lift route?

    我带着行李。那条路有台阶吗?有没有可以乘电梯的路线?

Once checked in, use the Beijing city guide’s station-to-entrance example for a different task: reaching a sightseeing gate without luggage.

Decide between rail and a road transfer

Rail is worth comparing when you can manage your luggage and the final connection is straightforward. A taxi or booked pickup may be a more practical choice for a group, bulky bags, limited mobility or a destination awkwardly placed for the rail network. That is a decision framework, not a claim that either option is always faster or cheaper.

For a road transfer, keep the Chinese destination and entrance instructions accessible before joining the official queue or meeting a booked driver. If using an app, use its actual pickup instructions; a pickup zone and a taxi queue need not be the same place. Confirm the vehicle and destination through the channel you booked.

Work through arrival in this order

  1. Finish the arrival formalities and collect your bags before committing to an immediate onward departure.
  2. Confirm your airport, terminal and accommodation entrance.
  3. Check whether the whole rail journey remains possible at that time, including the connecting line.
  4. Buy the correct airport ticket or arrange the road transfer you chose.
  5. Keep your address card available for the final connection.

At PKX, the city’s Beijing Service guide describes help with airport rail and bus ticket purchases at the service counter. Ask staff for the current route if the signs or ticket options are unclear. This guide has not tested the embedded ticket-purchase video.

If your flight is late

Do not rely on a holiday service extension from an old news story. Check the day’s departures after you are ready to leave the terminal. If the connecting rail service has ended, compare the airport’s staffed transport options with your property’s arrival advice. Advise the hotel if you will check in later than agreed.

Before leaving, open your Chinese address card and keep your hotel confirmation handy. For the return journey, make a fresh plan for the departure airport and terminal rather than reversing an old screenshot.

For the urban leg after airport rail, use the metro ticket, gate and transfer workflow. For a road leg, use the taxi pickup, destination and payment checks. Keep the airport ticket or service separate from the city connection; a map result does not complete either booking.

Plan the departure separately

Check your departure airport and terminal, then work backwards from the airline’s check-in and baggage requirements through the whole journey from your accommodation. Include checkout or collecting stored bags and every connection; do not assume the arrival route or timetable works in reverse. Use the city departure plan to separate flights from railway departures, or return to the three-day itinerary once the transfer is settled.

For the complete last-day sequence, use checkout, airport checks and boarding. It separates the hotel transfer, check-in and baggage deadlines, departure checks and gate arrival.
