Aim for a settled first night
After landing in Beijing or Shanghai, your priorities are to complete arrival procedures, get a usable connection, reach the right accommodation and have a way to pay. Save ambitious sightseeing for a day when your luggage, check-in and bookings are under control.
This is a suggested sequence for international arrivals staying in either city, with published source text reviewed on 18 October 2026. It is not a terminal walking guide or a promise that a particular desk is open when you land.
Before leaving the arrivals area
Follow the port’s current signs and instructions for entry formalities, baggage collection and customs. If you could not fill the arrival card before travel, use the official port-based alternatives and exemption checks with border-inspection staff. Keep the travel document and journey information you prepared readily available. If an entry question is unresolved, speak to the responsible official there.
Once landside, stop somewhere suitable to check the essentials:
- Can you open your saved hotel details?
- Does the intended data connection work?
- Can you access the payment method you planned to use?
- Does the transfer still make sense at your actual arrival time?
Avoid starting a complicated purchase or walking to a pickup point while still trying to solve all four at once.
If you need help with the phone or payments
| Arrival city | Officially described assistance | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Beijing | “Beijing Service” counters at the international arrival exits of Capital and Daxing airports | Where to arrange a local SIM, get payment-app assistance or confirm onward travel |
| Shanghai | One-stop centres in Pudong T1/T2 and Hongqiao T1 international arrival halls | Help with mobile communication, payment services, transport or commonly used apps |
These locations and service categories come from the Beijing arrival guide and Shanghai payment guide. Ask airport information staff about the relevant desk and current availability. Other terminals and domestic arrivals need their own arrangements.
For connectivity problems, check the active data line and provider’s instructions before buying another plan. For a payment error, use the actual message and the payment troubleshooting framework. A card listed in an app does not prove that the next purchase will succeed.
Choose the transfer you can complete now
Open the Beijing airport guide or Shanghai airport guide. Confirm the airport, current operating information and the route from the arrival station or drop-off point to your hotel’s door.
If the rail plan depends on a service you have missed, switch to a viable road option rather than chasing an old itinerary. For a taxi or app-booked ride, use the pickup and payment guide. Keep the hotel’s Chinese address on your address card, and confirm the destination before setting off.
If you have no working app, ask an official information desk or your accommodation for assistance with an appropriate alternative. Do not make a stranger’s verbal promise your only record of the journey.
At the hotel
Have the original accepted travel document, reservation and agreed payment method ready. Confirm the room and any deposit before assuming check-in is complete. If the room is not ready, ask about luggage storage rather than planning around an assumed early check-in.
The NIA’s accommodation notice distinguishes hotels, which register guests, from non-hotel stays, where the foreign visitor or host has a registration responsibility. A private-home stay needs that task addressed promptly. Read hotel and non-hotel preparation for the scope and official guidance.
If one part of the arrival plan fails
| Problem | What to do next |
|---|---|
| No usable data | Open the saved Chinese address; use the connection fallback and ask airport information about assistance |
| Wallet setup incomplete | Use your cash-and-card backup; follow the payment-error checks |
| Hotel cannot find the booking | Use the reception and booking checks; show the confirmation and contact the property or booking channel before paying for a second room |
| Staying in a private home | Arrange the first online filing with host assistance, or confirm the applicable offline process and keep the record |
The NIA’s Chinese notice specifies non-hotel registration within 24 hours after moving into the accommodation; its English notice describes the corresponding obligation and online channels. This is tied to the accommodation stay, not a reason to assume every traveller must leave the airport and visit a police station after landing. Hotels handle their guests’ registration under the hotel’s process.
Make tomorrow easier before going out
Find a simple meal nearby, charge your phone and confirm the next day’s first booking. Save the return address before leaving the property. Ask reception about the actual entrance or access arrangements if those are unclear.
If you feel ready to explore, choose one nearby area from Beijing or Shanghai rather than adding another cross-city journey. If you arrived late, getting settled is enough for the first day.
Choose a meal and keep help details handy
Use the first-meal guide to ask about portions, ingredients and the bill. Keep the official-help guide available for the distinction between urgent assistance and ordinary enquiries.
