Shanghai for first-time visitors: choose a neighbourhood, then explore

How should I get from the airport to my accommodation?

Plan PVG or SHA to your hotel, with Line 2 examples, the Hongqiao T1/T2 connection and checks for the final station-to-door leg.

Identify both the airport and the terminal

PVG means Pudong; SHA means Hongqiao. Check the terminal as well as the code before choosing a train or arranging a pickup. A rail ride between the airports, an onward flight connection and a transfer to your accommodation are three different tasks.

Choose the rail option for the destination you actually need

Arrival / task Option to compare The important distinction
Pudong to a destination along the urban network Metro Line 2 Include the onward connection and the walk to your entrance
Pudong with a useful connection at Longyang Road Maglev, then onward transport The Maglev does not end at your central hotel
Hongqiao Terminal 1 Metro Line 10 Do not assume the same station access as Terminal 2
Hongqiao Terminal 2 Metro Lines 2 or 10 Choose by the full onward route
Travel between Pudong and Hongqiao’s Terminal 2 side Airport Link Line It is not a promise of enough time between flights

The terminal-specific metro and Maglev facts come from the airport-authority guide republished by Shanghai, updated 4 June 2026. The Airport Link guide, updated 31 March 2026, identifies the airport-terminal endpoints. Check current station displays and operator notices before buying; this guide has not verified a live timetable.

Match a city station to your actual hotel

Pudong: Line 2 to People’s Square or Jing’an Temple

If the hotel identifies 人民广场 — People’s Square or 静安寺 — Jing’an Temple as its useful station, compare 浦东1号2号航站楼 — Pudong Airport T1 & T2 → Metro Line 2 → that city station → the confirmed hotel entrance. The airport transport guide identifies the Pudong Line 2 service; Baidu Maps’ Line 2 station list includes both city stations. Follow the current destination display and service pattern.

This is a direct-line example, so a Maglev or Airport Link ride is not a required part of it. Compare those products only when their full connection suits your destination. Check the time when you will actually reach the platform after arrival formalities, not the scheduled aircraft landing time.

Hongqiao: choose the terminal before the line

  • T2 to a hotel using People’s Square or Jing’an Temple: compare Line 2 from 虹桥2号航站楼 — Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 to the confirmed city station, then the last walk or road connection.
  • T1 to the same Line 2-based plan: one arrangement to compare is Line 10 from 虹桥1号航站楼 to Hongqiao T2, then Line 2. Follow the current interchange signs and include the transfer walk. The airport guide confirms Line 10 between the terminals and Lines 2/10 at T2. For a different hotel, a Line 10 route may suit better; do not travel to T2 automatically.

Hongqiao Railway Station, Hongqiao T1 and Hongqiao T2 are distinct destinations. Copy the terminal or station name from your actual ticket. These examples do not establish a through-ticket product, current last train or accessible interchange.

From the exit to reception

Before travelling, ask the hotel for the exact branch, useful metro exit, guest entrance and route with luggage. Save that reply and the Chinese address. At the city station, match the exit signs before leaving; use walking directions to the confirmed entrance rather than the centre of the building’s map pin. If the exit is closed or stairs are unsuitable, ask station staff for the current alternative.

For a taxi or booked pickup, agree a legal, reachable street-level meeting point and keep the destination separate from the pickup pin. No city-station taxi rank, hotel gate or lift has been inspected for these examples. The maps workflow and hotel guide help retain the details; use an address card to show them.

For sightseeing after check-in, continue with the Museum East station-to-visitor-entrance example. An airport-to-hotel plan should not be reused as a museum entrance instruction.

The English Airport Link guide names 虹桥2号航站楼站 (Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2) and 浦东1号2号航站楼站 (Pudong T1 & T2). It distinguishes an in-station Metro Line 9 transfer at Zhongchun Road from out-of-station connections listed elsewhere. Follow the signs for the actual interchange; a common station name does not guarantee one continuous paid area.

The Chinese 1 April 2026 service notice describes a 5.45 am first departure from Hongqiao T2 towards Pudong and a 10.15 pm last departure from Pudong towards Hongqiao T2. These are different directions and different ends of the day, not a complete timetable for every station. They are a dated published schedule, not a live departure check.

For a late journey, check the onward metro or road connection as well as the airport train. Being able to board the first service does not establish that the next connection will still run.

Make a door-to-door comparison

A fast train segment is only one part of the journey. Compare the time needed to reach its station, wait, change, and walk to the accommodation with your luggage. A road transfer may be more suitable for a group or an awkward final connection, but road traffic and pickup queues make a universal travel-time promise inappropriate.

Before joining a taxi queue or arranging a pickup, have the Chinese name and address of your destination. Confirm which entrance the driver should use. For an app-booked ride, follow the booking’s pickup instructions and match the vehicle details; do not substitute a taxi queue simply because it is nearby.

If you are changing airports

Read the arrival and departure terminals, the booking’s baggage arrangements and the airline’s check-in requirements before deciding whether the connection works. An advertised rail running time is not the time required from one flight to the next. Allow for arrival formalities, bags, station walks, onward terminal access and the next flight’s check-in/security process.

Ask the airline about a tight or disrupted connection. This guide does not certify that a particular connection is feasible, and it does not verify permission to leave an international transit area.

If rail has finished for the night

The Shanghai Airport Authority bus page lists a Pudong late-night service. Its stops and departures still need checking for your terminal and travel date; do not assume it stops near your hotel or runs with the same frequency all night. Compare the current staffed bus and taxi options, and tell the accommodation if arrival will be late.

Save your destination in an address card. Before the trip, use the hotel checklist and compare Shanghai base areas so that the last part of the journey is as clear as the first.

For the urban leg after airport rail, use the metro ticket, gate and transfer workflow. For a road leg, use the taxi pickup, destination and payment checks. Keep the airport ticket or service separate from the city connection; a map result does not complete either booking.

Plan the departure separately

Check your departure airport and terminal, then work backwards from the airline’s check-in and baggage requirements through the whole journey from your accommodation. Include checkout or collecting stored bags and every connection; do not assume the arrival route or timetable works in reverse. Use the city departure plan to separate flights from railway departures, or return to the three-day itinerary once the transfer is settled.

For the complete last-day sequence, use checkout, airport checks and boarding. It separates the hotel transfer, check-in and baggage deadlines, departure checks and gate arrival.
