Three full days, grouped by area
Spend one day around the old city and the Bund, one in Pudong, and one around Jing’an and a selected stretch of Suzhou Creek. This gives Shanghai three different kinds of day without crossing the river repeatedly to collect landmarks.
Arrive the day before. The schedule assumes three full sightseeing days, separate from your flight or intercity train. Walking, meals and breaks are part of the plan; a skyline observation deck, cruise or night show is an extra booking, not an included stop.
Chinese and English official material reviewed 18 October 2026. All visit lengths and connection allowances below are editorial planning budgets. They are not live map results, tested walking times or promises about queues.
| Day | Main visit | Later in the day | What to leave flexible |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Yuyuan Garden in daylight | Old-city lunch, then the Bund | Nanjing East Road or an evening return |
| 2 | Shanghai Museum East | Lunch and a connection to Lujiazui waterfront | A tower visit only if separately researched and booked |
| 3 | Jing’an Temple exterior and West Nanjing Road | Line 12 to Hanzhong Road, then a Butterfly Bay park loop | Shorten the streets or finish after lunch |
Use the Shanghai accommodation guide to choose a base. A neighbourhood name does not tell you the travel time from your specific hotel entrance.
Use the Shanghai local-journey guidance to choose a station exit, ticket method or taxi destination for each leg.
Put the opening-day rules into your calendar
- Yuyuan Garden daytime visit: normally closed Monday except statutory holidays; 9 am–4.30 pm, last entry 4 pm. Confirm your date, ticket product, entrance and any special notice.
- Shanghai Museum East: normally closed Tuesday except national holidays; 10 am–6 pm, last entry 5 pm. Confirm current general admission, special exhibitions, booked experiences and crowd controls.
- Street and waterfront walks: walking in an area does not include a museum ticket. Check current public access, weather and restrictions on your selected section.
The garden rules come from the operator’s Chinese visitor notice; museum rules come from its English East Museum visitor information. Holiday exceptions need checking against the actual date. Move the first two days around if required, rather than arriving at a closed venue.
Day 1: Yuyuan Garden, the old city and the Bund
Morning: a daytime garden visit
This morning is for 豫园 — Yuyuan Garden, the classical garden. Save the individual south entrance at 豫园老街279号 — 279 Yuyuan Old Street, near the Nine-Bend Bridge landing; the operator also lists a north gate at 168 Fuyou Road. Follow the entrance for your actual daytime ticket. Operator visitor information.
Before setting out, use the daytime product, passport and gate checks. Current published pages list the 上海豫园 mini-program and gate windows but do not explain a complete foreign-passport entry process. Carry the original passport as a precaution and confirm the ticket format, any exchange and required documents with official staff before paying. An online document rejection is not proof a window can override it.
If admission cannot be confirmed, omit the garden, keep the planned meal break and check the public-area connection toward the Bund. During an event, check restrictions on those lanes too; this is not a guaranteed unrestricted shortcut.
Allow roughly one and a half to two hours for the garden, with extra approach and queue time. This is a suggested pace, not an official visit duration. Do not arrive close to last admission and expect a full morning’s visit.
Keep daytime garden admission, the garden night tour and the 豫园商城 lantern festival separate. The 2025 night-tour launch and 2026 seasonal lantern ticket guide describe different historical products. They do not establish one ticket covering all three, a current evening timetable or daytime passport checks.
Lunch: stop in the old-city area
Keep about an hour for lunch and a seated break. Use the Shanghai food guide to compare soup dumplings and pan-fried buns and check portions in the old-city area. Check the menu, payment and any dietary needs at the place you actually choose. This itinerary does not claim a particular restaurant has been tested, is open today or can meet an allergy requirement.
Leave the surrounding shopping lanes flexible. If the garden has been crowded or your arrival morning was tiring, this is the first part to shorten.
Afternoon: one section of the Bund
Allow a flexible 45–60 minutes to connect from the old-city area to your chosen Bund starting point, including leaving the garden district and finding transport if needed. This is an editorial allowance; a live route from your exact exit may differ.
At 外滩 — the Bund, choose a manageable waterfront section. Huangpu Park and Waibaidu Bridge can help orient a northern section, but you do not need to walk every part of the riverfront. The municipal material places the Bund and old-city Yuyuan within Huangpu’s visitor areas. Shanghai Huangpu riverfront and old-city overview.
Budget around one to two hours including stops. If you want Nanjing East Road afterwards, make it an optional extension and check the connection from where you finish. For the shorter version, have dinner and return to your hotel. A return for evening views can be enjoyable, but no exact lighting schedule or uninterrupted access has been verified for this guide.
Day 2: Shanghai Museum East and Pudong waterfront
Morning: check that you have the East Museum
The itinerary uses 上海博物馆东馆 — Shanghai Museum East, at 世纪大道1952号 — 1952 Century Avenue, rather than the museum building at People’s Square. For general individual admission, the museum directs visitors to the B1 east entrance near Dingxiang Road. Save that entrance as well as the building name. For a Line 2 approach, use the station-to-Museum-East example for the Chinese station name, published exit and final visitor entrance. East Museum visitor information.
Decide before leaving whether this is an ordinary gallery visit or includes a separately booked experience. Individual general entry is reservation-free under the museum’s published conditions; bring the original valid ID. The official city guide, updated November 2025, explicitly includes passports. Use the Museum East admission checklist for Curio-City/Digital Gallery Special Reservation, separate exhibition tickets and the limited north-side priority channel. Priority venue entry does not replace those bookings.
Keep any confirmed experience’s visitor, date and session accessible. The museum’s generic ID-scanning instructions do not explain a foreign-passport reader or assisted-entry sequence. If your document cannot be read, ask entrance staff with the original ready; do not assume the north gate resolves it. If only an optional experience is unavailable, shorten the visit to ordinary galleries when entry is available. If admission itself remains unresolved, keep lunch and omit the museum; no-reservation entry still allows capacity controls. Museum visitor conditions.
Protect roughly three to four hours for selected galleries and breaks. Start with the collections you most want to see and remove others if queues or fatigue use up the time. The museum’s 10 am opening means an early breakfast does not create an earlier gallery slot.
If you need a break before finishing, ask staff about the designated food-and-drink areas: the museum’s Chinese and English visitor conditions identify the 1F Cultural & Creative Zone and 2F Cultural & Public Square. They prohibit eating in galleries, corridors, lobbies and museum shops. This does not confirm a particular meal or queue time. Shorten the gallery list if lunch would be too late; check re-entry conditions before leaving for an outside meal.
Lunch and afternoon: move to Lujiazui
Keep lunch in Pudong using the museum-day meal approach. Allow an hour for lunch and rest, then budget a separate 45–60-minute connection to your selected Lujiazui waterfront starting point. This is a planning allowance, not a timed route. The museum and 陆家嘴 — Lujiazui are both in Pudong, but they are different stops; “same side of the river” does not mean adjacent entrances.
Use a short waterfront walk for views toward the Bund. Leave another one to two hours for the walk and a drink, adjusting for weather and daylight. This plan does not include a tower observation deck or a boat ticket: add one only after checking the exact operator, admission time, entrance and cancellation terms. Keep enough time to reach that entrance without relying on the walk finishing at an exact minute.
For a shorter day, finish after the museum and lunch. This preserves the main visit and avoids turning fatigue into a rushed river crossing.
Day 3: Jing’an, then a selected Suzhou Creek walk
Use this specific route: Jing’an Temple exterior → West Nanjing Road → lunch near West Nanjing Road station → Line 12 to Hanzhong Road → Butterfly Bay Park → back to Hanzhong Road station. The creek outing is a short south-bank park loop between two bridges, with a return to its starting address. It is a separate transfer from the morning streets.
Morning: Jing’an Temple to West Nanjing Road station
Start beside 静安寺 — Jing’an Temple, on West Nanjing Road, for an exterior look. Continue east along 南京西路 — West Nanjing Road, choosing a manageable stretch of public pavement and street-level browsing before reaching the West Nanjing Road station area. The district’s English overview identifies these visitor areas. Navigate to the entrance signed Line 12 for the later journey, rather than assuming every entrance with the station name serves the same line.
Allow about two hours including a seated drink and browsing as an editorial budget. Temple interior admission is outside this plan; research and arrange it separately if you want to enter, and shorten the later walk. This guide does not include a temple ticket, shop-opening schedule or tested pedestrian crossing sequence.
Lunch: eat before the creek transfer
Keep about an hour for lunch and a seated break near West Nanjing Road station. The Shanghai food guide’s Day 3 meal plan offers noodles for lunch or a benbang dinner later. Select an actual branch near your chosen station approach; save the Chinese address and confirm the menu and service hours. A district-wide food example is not necessarily beside the metro.
Eat before boarding rather than relying on an unverified riverside café. Carry water and leave a later dinner flexible. These are editorial choices, not a restaurant booking or a promise of refreshments on the path.
Transfer: Line 12 to Hanzhong Road, then the park
- Enter 南京西路站 — West Nanjing Road station’s Line 12 service. Take the direction whose next stop is 汉中路 — Hanzhong Road, and get off there after one stop. Check the current station map and platform display before boarding. Baidu Maps’ Line 12 station sequence places the stops together; it is not a live service check.
- At Hanzhong Road, start by investigating Exit 5, then use walking directions to 蝴蝶湾公园 / 蝴蝶湾花园 — Butterfly Bay Park, 康定东路50号 — 50 Kangding East Road. Shanghai’s August 2024 English guide lists this exit and an approximately 700-metre approach. The Chinese district route confirms the park address. The distance is the guide’s reference, not our measurement; follow current crossings and park access.
- Save the park address and Hanzhong Road station for the return. If Exit 5 is closed or does not suit your access needs, ask station staff for the current approach. This is not a verified step-free route.
Protect 45–60 minutes for the whole lunch-to-park connection as an editorial allowance, including reaching the correct entrance, waiting, riding and walking. It is not a measured transfer or a train running time. For less walking, compare a taxi or booked ride to the park’s Kangding East Road side; arrange a legal pickup and drop-off rather than requesting a stop on a bridge. No fare or road duration has been verified.
Afternoon: a Butterfly Bay loop with a clear finish
Use the Kangding East Road side of the park, with 50 Kangding East Road as the published address reference. Start and finish at the same open public access you use there, noting it on arrival. The directory address is not a surveyed gate position. Inside the accessible public space:
- Head toward the 恒丰路桥 — Hengfeng Road Bridge side, the eastern end of the park, for a first creek view.
- Follow the open south-bank path west through Butterfly Bay toward 昌平路桥 — Changping Road Bridge, the western turning point. Keep the bridges as orientation markers; the loop stays on the park side of the river.
- Turn back through the park to the Kangding East Road access where you began. Pause where seating is available, and keep the option to turn earlier.
The district’s 2022 park report describes a roughly 360-metre waterfront segment between the bridges. That is a published segment length, excluding the station approach, return and morning walk. The May 2026 district reply confirms the park boundaries; its future pier and transport proposals do not establish a boat service for this itinerary.
Allow 45–60 minutes for the park loop, views and rests, as an editorial budget. Use the paths actually open, without passing a barrier to preserve the route. If a section is closed, turn back within the park or omit the outing. This short plan stops here; Sihang Warehouse, a cruise and the Bund are not extra compulsory stops.
For the default finish, retrace your checked approach to Hanzhong Road station and choose the line for your hotel or dinner destination. Set aside another 30–45 minutes to leave the park and reach the station, adjusting to the actual path and your pace; this is also an unmeasured allowance. The onward train or taxi journey is additional.
Shorten the day without losing lunch or the return
- Less morning walking: take Line 2 between Jing’an Temple and West Nanjing Road instead of the longer street stretch. The city’s February 2026 route identifies the one-stop connection. After lunch, find Line 12 for the creek transfer.
- A shorter creek visit: enter at the saved park address, choose one nearby view and rest, then return by the same known access. Reaching both bridge sides is optional.
- Rain, heat, fatigue or departure day: finish after the Jing’an lunch and omit the creek transfer. Keep the airport journey or railway departure separate from sightseeing.
For the search, route mode and saved address, use the maps and translation workflow. No current entrance, metro journey, park loop or meal has been tested on site.
Weather, closures and a gentler version
Move the museum day to poor weather only if it is open and the required admission arrangements are available. No-reservation general entry can still involve crowd control. If the museum is unavailable, this guide does not promise an unresearched indoor attraction as a guaranteed substitute.
In heat or rain, shorten exposed waterfront sections and preserve lunch and rest. Day 1 can end after the garden and lunch; Day 2 after the museum; Day 3 after its Jing’an lunch. These choices are more practical than adding a faraway replacement to fill the clock.
This route has not been checked for step-free access. Confirm lifts, entrances, toilets and the exact walking surface with venues and transport providers if these affect your visit.
Continue with the Shanghai city guide, attraction booking guide or nine-day Beijing–Shanghai route. No venue bookings, meals or transport are included or arranged.
